Gestern: warm, Sonnenschein und blauer Himmel

mittags: kalt, bewoelkt und trocken
abends: sonnig und warm aber ein turbulenter Wind
Mir wurde versichert, dass es sicher bis Weihnachten keinen Schnee geben wird. Die Schotten meinen, dass es nicht immer regnet. Der heutige Tag ist typisch. Man muss Kleider fuer jede Wetterlage mitschleppen!

Schweizer Studenten schreiben sich nicht bei den andern europaeischen Studenten ein. Ich musste zu einem andern Gebaeude und mich in die Schlange der Studenten aus Uebersee einreihen. Unter lauter Asiaten und Afrikanern kam ich mir leicht deplaziert vor.

Wenn man mich sieht, macht es den Anschein als haette ich mich noch ueberhaupt nicht ans schottische Wetter anklimatisiert. Es ist schon ziemlich kalt und so bin ich in warme Kleider gehuellt. Nicht so die schottischen Studenten: kurze Hosen, Miniroeckchen, FlipFlops, T-shirt...
Mittlerweile bin ich im Lacross Club der Uni. Die spielen diesen Sport wie Rugby mit Helm und Ruestung. Nach dem Training geht es auf dem direktesten Weg ins Pub Bier trinken, auch wenn es erst Nachmittag um 2 ist.

Einige Probleme in Edinburgh beginnen sich zu loesen. Ich habe seit heute Mittag ein Zimmer in einer Altstadtwohnung. Eine super Wohnung im obersten Stock: grosses Zimmer mit Doppelbett,zwei Badezimmer, eine Kueche mit allem Drum und Dran und ein riesiges Wohnzimmer. Es wohnt nur noch eine Studentin mit jamaikanischer Abstammung aus England in dieser Wohnung. Wer mich also besuchen moechte, findet sicher genuegend Platz in meinem Appartement (Raphi du Sack chunsch!). Die definitive Adresse gebe ich euch wenn ich eingezogen bin.
Dafuer hat mir die Uni gestern meinen Politikkurs gestrichen. Sie haben zuviele Studenten, welche diese Vorlesung machen moechten. In Edinburgh duerfen naemlich nur soviele Studenten den Kurs belegen, wie Plaetze im Vorlesungssaal vorhanden sind. Aus diesem Grund duerfen jetzt etliche Leute diesen Kurs nicht besuchen. Zum Glueck habe ich aber ein unterschriebene Offerte, dass ich diesen Kurs machen darf. So sind Campbells (die Leute wo ich momentan noch wohne, beides Professoren an der Uni Edinburgh) schon heute an der Uni zu den hoechsten Instanzen gegangen, um meine Rechte durchzusetzen. Vielleicht gibt es ja noch eine Sonderregelung, weil mir diese Vorlesung ja garantiert wurde.
In Edinburgh gibt es so viele Sachen anzuschauen, dass ich jetzt nach zwei Wochen immer noch lange nicht alles gesehen habe. Der ISC (International Student Center) organisiert zudem noch jeden Samstag einen Trip irgenwohin in Schottland. Diesen Samstag war ich North Berwick an der Kueste.
Aber es gibt auch viel Arbeit. Reichlich mehr waehrend dem Semester als an der ETH, vor allem wenn man zuerst alle Papers uebersetzen muss. Ich muss drei Essays a 2000 Worte schreiben, zudem hat man noch die ganze Zeit Labor und Tutorial und die Vorlesungen sind Testatpflichtig.
Dafuer kann man am Wochenende super Sachen unternehmen. Naechstes Wochenende gehe ich nach Glasgow. Das Wochenende drauf kann ich mit dem Segelclub auf einen Dreitagesturn auf einer Segelyacht!

Am 28.9.82 um 7.7am erblickte ich zum ersten mal das Licht. Dieses Jubilaeum wurde in einem Pub bis heute in die fruehen Morgenstunden begossen. Studenten kriegen im Bannermans fuer 5£ drei grosse Bier. Nach 4.5 Liter Guiness, Karaoke (kei Angst, i ha nuet gsunge) und viel englischer Konversation fuehlte ich mich heute morgen nicht mehr imstande meiner Meteorologie Vorlesung um 10 beizuwohnen.

In Schottland gibt es zwar ein Bahnnetz. Die Busse fahren aber so haeufig und so billig, dass eigentlich niemand den Zug nimmt. Nach Glasgow faehrt fuer drei Pfund hin und zurueck alle 10 Minuten ein Bus. Glasgow ist eine ziemlich haessliche Industriestadt mit ein paar interessanten Fleckchen, wie zum Beispiel einem riesigen alten keltischen Friedhof auf einem Huegel neben einer Kathedrale. Wenn man sich die Autobahn auf der einen Seite und die Chemiefabrik auf der andern Seite wegdenkt ist es ziemlich schoen von hier ueber die ganze Stadt zu schauen. Glasgow ist einer der Orte in Schottland mit den meisten Niederschlaegen. Aber wir hatten wieder mal blauen Himmel und Sonnenschein, recht warm. Ich habe meinen Schirm, den ich extra fuer Schottland gekauft habe, sowieso erst einmal brauchen koennen. Vielleicht kommt ja das Regenwetter noch wenn Raphi zu Besuch ist, wer weiss.

Am Freitag Nachmittag ging es los nach Largs. Largs ist ein kleiner Ort an der Westkueste Schottlands.Weil wir in Glasgow mehrere Stunden im Stau stecken geblieben sind, war an diesem Tag nichts mehr mit Segeln. So organisierten wir uns Chippies (Fish and Chips) und verbrachten den Abend im Pub mit britischen Trinkspielen. Wenn man sein Glas in den Haenden haelt und jemand schmeisst dir eine Muenze ins Glas heisst es: the queen is drowning. Um die Queen (Auf jeder Muenze) vor dem Tod zu retten muss man das ganze Glas exen! Da spielt es keine Rolle ob man gerade von der Bar mit einem grossen Bier kommt oder jemand einen Drink geniessen moechte. Es wird getrunken ob Frau oder Mann.
Am Samstag morgen ging es dann los nach Talbert. Alle konnten Steuern, Segel setzen usw. Das Wetter war ziemlich gut mit viel Wind und Sonne und ab und zu Regen. Am Abend wieder im Pub froehlich heiteres Betrinken.
Am Sonntag hatten wir dann richtig Sturm. 12 Beaufort, 3 m hohe Wellen, Regen. Das aufregenste war, auf Deck am Bug des Schiffes zu stehen. Da ist es wie auf der Achterbahn, wenn das Schiff von einer 3 m hohen Welle hinabfaellt und dann in die naechste Welle eintaucht. Dann wird man fast von Bord gerissen und ist danach natuerlich total nass trotz wasserfester Segelausruestung. Wenn die Gischt ueber das Schiff schlaegt fuehlt es sich wie Nadeln im Gesicht an. Die
Arbeit auf dem Schiff muss natuerlich trotzdem verrichtet werden.

After eating 500 g of spaghetti we went to the pub at Bannermans. We have been up to drinking 10 pints of Guinness but we realised only 6 since one Guiness comes up to one meal and so we didnt have been hungry no longer. At 3am we went home for getting some sleep until 8am. Getting up, having a shower and hurry to the bus for Kings Buildings where my lecture takes place. After the lecture we went to a Pub and had some food. Starched again we climbed up Arthurs Seat and made some sightseeing at Edinburgh. Tonight we will cook a lot of quick and dirty food and then get to the pub The Last Drop drinking some Whiskies. In The Last Drop the people got their last Whisky before the have been executed.

One day after Raphi left Edinburgh on Thursday Alexandra arrived. Fortunately the University had a mid semester break and so I got 2 days free. Therefore we went up to the Northern Highlands. In the morning before we left I cut my finger. We couldnt find any open pharmacy but it would be possible to buy some souveniers on Sonday 9am. However we managed to get the bus and the busdriver gave us his first aid kit. Regrettably it was pouring while our hiking tour and we really got wet. Healthy arrived at Inverness we decided to make a cruise on Loch Ness and visit castle Urquhart. In the evening we met a friend of Campbels and she brought us to her house in Strathpeffer where we stayed for one night. The next day she gave us a lift to Cannich in the Natural Reserve of Glen Affric (=Valley Affric), one of the most beautiful areas in Scotland. We planned to walk around Loch Affric (=Lake Affric). However we couldnt walk the whole way around because of a huge river without any bridge we had to turn back and walk some extra miles. We were walking for 5 hours and about 13 miles and it was so wet and cold but we had a very nice B&B for warming up after the walk. Back in Edinburgh we climed Arthurs Seat, walked along Portobello beach, enjoied the pubs. We really underwent the most beautiful days at Edinburgh until Friday when we realized that the ETH really sucks.
Yesterday I gave in my politics essay but I cannot really relieve myself. For I have to write another 2000 words essay (How can cities minimize their negative impacts on environment?) until Thursday next week. Fortunately its the last one and I will have a lot of free time when David will be here. As always if the weather is nice (No clouds, only the blue sky with the sun) I have to read in the library and work hard.
This weekend I will go on a trip to the Isle of Arran. I think it will be raining cats and dogs again to laugh at me when I want to climb some hills.

All you silly asses at home still alive or are all of you already lost in the ETH's slough? I am wondering because I didn't hear anything about you for quite a long time!

Arran is a small island in the Southwest of Scotland also called as Scotland in miniature. The weatherforcast for that trip was really bad and when we arrived it was pouring. However five minutes later it stopped raining and we had two perfect sunny days.
On Saturday we were walking along beautiful beaches and visited some caves and famous standing stones. We saw a little dead whale on beach too. When we were standing there looking at him like little boys a wave came in and our shoos were totally wet. We spent the night at a Youth Hostel in Lochranza at the very North of the Island.
On Sunday we tried to climb the highest mountain, or for Swiss guys a hill (about 800 m). At the Height of 700m it was so windy that we had to give up. The wind was so strong that it literally overthrew you. We decided that that is to dangerous because the top was in clouds anyway. 00D (David Disch for all not ETH students) arrived at the Waverly Station at Edinburgh at 19.08 with the train from Leeds. After eating at my flat we went to a Pub in Grassmarket. There was traditional scotish music and the best thing, its a non-smoking pub hence you dont have to throw away your clothes the next day. Later on we decided to go to the Jazzbar, thats a really cool bar with live jazz and its free!
On Friday I had my lectures so we only visited the city and went to some other pubs.
On Saturday we went to Queensferry by hitchhiking. There are the famous bridges of Edinburgh over the Firth of Forth. They are really impressive because of their height and length. Here in Edinburgh it gets already pitch black at 4pm! Thats why we went to a Pub looking some Football (Scotland : USA, England : Argentina) and drinking some beer. It was really amazing when Argentina made a goal. All in the Pub were cheering. Scots really hate English!
The weather was perfect on Sunday, so went to the Royal Botanic Gardens. Unfortunately they dont have many glass houses and because of that there wasnt much to see. Tea time at four and then back to the train station.
After triple D left I had to do a degree exercise for my meteorogy course. However from now on I have done all my essays and degree work so I have time for Pubs and preparing my exams in December.

Fortunately Alex found time to visit me again at Edinburgh. We enjoyed some really nice days. The weather was perfect and we made a few trips. On Saturday we went with the ISC to Loch Lomond and on Sunday to Glasgow. It was a really nice time and we had a lot of fun!
Since I had so many visitors at Edinburgh I have now to read all the stuff which I should have read for the lectures years ago. Therefore I stay most of my time in the Library reading chapter after chapter of politics. However its at least interesting. Moreover I have to prepare my exams which start on december 7th. My last three weeks in Edinburgh are hence quite busy. However when I come home I don't have lectures at ETH until the SS, yep!
Edinburgh got bitterly cold and its really freezing. Even in my flat its cold because of its so bad isolated. I think there would be no difference between opened or closed windows. So we heat and heat and waste shit loads of energy. However we do something for the Greenhouse Effect and help Scotland to get warmer.
Yesterday it was snowing!!! A blizzard passed Edinburgh and covered the whole city with a white diffused layer. Unfortunately all the snow is already melted :( Nevertheless you can see people with snowboards and skis in the city. They go skiing on the dry slope of Edinburgh :)
And Raphi, our tv has now about 50 programmes and it had it allreadey when you were here but we didn't know that. Therefore we can watch now championsleage!!!

I am still alive and not frozen to death but thank you for asking. I am trying to survive during my exams and the reading and learning in the library!
However Scotland or at least Edinburgh is not really cold. Today I could walk to the university only wearing a jumper. Because of these mild temperatures the Scots are again only in there shirts or mini skirts!
Fortunately my last exam is on Monday! Then I will get really wasted and make some trips until Saturday.
For all guys who have never seen Trainspotting, watch it and watch it in English! This movie is playing in Edinburgh and Glasgow and the dialects are really Scottish. Its so funny when they begin with cursing :)
At the moment I cannot tell you more because I am learning but I could explain you the nation state or globalization, if you are interested in these things :)

Yesterday I had my last exam and hence I went out last night for celebrating and drinking until everything was closed and we had to do home. Actually that is what I am going to do for the last few days in Edinburgh: be wasted until Saturday. I hope that I will not miss my bus to the airport and that I will not throw up in the airplane. So don't be afraid if you don't hear anything about me, it is only because of I am lying under a table in a pub :)

I am back in Switzerland since December 17th and I will stay here for the next time. So if you see me at the ETH it is no Fatamorgana but it is me in real!
However I do not have any lectures or tutorials but. I am learning for my exams in February hence you will not see me in a lecture.
